The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service has confirmed that an inmate was found dead in a cell at the Port of Spain prison.
A statement from the Prison Service said that the yet-to-be-named individual was discovered hanging in his cell on Sunday. No time was given.
An interim report stated that the discovery was made while officers were conducting their rounds and observed that the individual was hanging.
Established protocols were engaged, and medical services responded and rendered first aid, but to no avail.
The release stated that the inmate’s next of kin has been contacted and that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway.
