Bethel Claim Crucial First Division Win At Mt. Grace

Two teams straddling the middle of the First Division had an opportunity to move into the chasing pack on Thursday. In the end, it was Bethel United who left the Mt. Grace Recreation Ground with the points over FC Goodwood.

With the Christmas break, the FA Cup and the Carnival break out of the way, league action in the Tobago First Division can now go uninterrupted. Two teams, FC Goodwood and Bethel United, who were looking to solidify themselves in the first half of the 10-team table, met on Thursday at the Mt. Grace Recreation Ground.

Bethel United, in all red, got the first look at goal in the 8th minute of play from a free-kick, which sailed harmlessly over the bar. Goodwood tried their luck from distance in the 34th minute, with keeper Jason Surrey struggling to hold on to the ball. Still no score at the half-time whistle.

The opening goal came in the 70th minute with a big punt from keeper Surrey, which Goodwood failed to clear, allowing the persistent Shaquille Cox to eventually slot home into an open net. 1–0 Bethel United. Goodwood, still shaken, nearly conceded again two minutes later. The post, then a wild swing, got them off the hook.

No doubt Bethel were in the ascendancy and cashed in in the 78th minute. A composed finish by Trivell Williams made it 2–0. No more scoring in this contest as Bethel United take the 2–0 win to leapfrog FC Goodwood and move into the top half of the table. Carnbee / Mt Pleasant still lead the First Division charts.
