Tobago People’s Party Political Leader Farley Augustine says the two-year-old party didn’t just bring a blue wave, it delivered a blue tsunami, sweeping all 15 seats in the January 12th THA elections.
Just after 10pm on Monday, celebrations erupted at the Tobago People’s Party camp as preliminary results showed the party securing 14 seats, with tabulations still outstanding for Darrel Spring/Whim. About 20 minutes later, cheers grew louder as it was announced that the TPP had captured all 15 seats.
Within minutes, waves of blue supporters began filling the streets of Scarborough, and by 10:30pm, the Milford Road Esplanade was awash with jubilant supporters celebrating the landslide victory.
TPP Political Leader Farley Augustine said the results reflected the will of the people.
“Today the people of Tobago said we only want an indigenous Tobago political institution to lead us. No outside party here.”
For the party, which was formed in 2023, Mr. Augustine described Monday’s victory as historic.
“This is the second time in the last 45 years that we have had a political party with 14 or more seats. This is the second time in our 45 years that a political party has won all seats, but this is the first time in our 45 years a political party won 15 seats.”
Mr. Augustine assured that all Tobagonians would benefit from the party’s plans outlined in its Blueprint for the island.
“Our campaign said that Tobago is we. That means that the Tobago we represent includes those that did not vote for us, and I want to say that as long as I am the leader of this team, we will ensure that all Tobagonians, all of Tobago, whether you are black, blue, red, white or indifferent, that you are provided for by the Tobago House of Assembly.”
Among those acknowledged for the party’s victory was the former political leader of the Progressive Democratic Patriots, Watson Duke.
“We cannot let the night pass without acknowledging a surprise endorsement that we received from the founder, the owner, the leader of the Progressive Democratic Patriots, who decided it would have been best to sit this election out and to give his endorsement, his support, to the Tobago People’s Party, and I must acknowledge and thank him for his support.”
According to preliminary figures from the Elections and Boundaries Commission, the Tobago People’s Party received 16,240 votes.
