Canadian High Commissioner Joins Ramadan Observances In Barrackpore

In a show of camaraderie with the local Muslim community, Canada’s High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Michael Callan, joined Muslims from the Barrackpore district for evening prayer and to break the fast on Monday.

In his message, he emphasised the importance of unity and mutual respect during this period.

“Principles of solidarity and compassion, and humanity. I think across the world we see that in place of those there’s increasing frictions and misunderstandings and intolerance. And at times like these during the month of Ramadan where we are reminded of the importance of staying close together, of supporting each other, of respecting each other, and loving one another.”

Member of Parliament for Princes Town, Dr. Aiyna Ali, hosted Ambassador Callan during the visit.

“It was absolutely my honour to have the High Commissioner of Canada with us tonight. It is always a pleasure to welcome anyone to South Trinidad. You know, this is my home, this is where I grew up, and I am more than delighted and I thank the masjid. This is ASJA Mosque No. 1 in Barrackpore, for hosting us here tonight.”

The visit concluded with High Commissioner Callan sharing his experience.

“It’s been a beautiful thing from start to finish. First from the welcoming into your home to meet part of your family, to learn a little bit more about the region and then to meet the Imam and be introduced to his colleagues and some of the congregants, some of the practitioners here. Then finally to spend time around these tables, to just be surrounded by the spirit of hospitality, welcome, and warmth, it’s been a beautiful moment.”

Ramadan is the holiest month on the Muslim calendar. It is observed by fasting, communal prayer, reflection, charity, and the study of the Quran.
