The Council of the City of Port-of-Spain has launched a disaster relief drive in support of its sister city, the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) in Jamaica.
This humanitarian effort follows the catastrophic devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
This urgent action – formalised by a unanimous motion of the Port of Spain City Council – underscores the longstanding friendly relations and the commitment established by the 2004 twinning agreement between the two capital cities.
Port of Spain and Kingston were twinned with the intention to promote cultural, tourist, social and economic exchanges and to encourage the development of understanding, mutual respect and friendship between the inhabitants of both cities.
The relief effort is a direct appeal to Port-of-Spain residents and is structured to ensure effective, coordinated assistance. The plan outlines the steps for encouraging residents to donate relief supplies specifically identified by Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). All donations can be delivered to City Hall, Port of Spain and will be dispatched to Jamaica via close coordination with the Jamaican High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago.
The City urges all residents and businesses to participate in support of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation. Specific items requested by Jamaica’s ODPEM, collection hours, and further details will be available on the Corporation’s social media channels.
