San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris has welcomed clean-up and revitalisation efforts to brighten the second city ahead of the Christmas and Carnival seasons.
On Monday, the San Fernando Market remained closed as it underwent a thorough sanitisation process.
Mayor Robert Parris says, amidst the upcoming festive season, there are ongoing works to brighten up the city, including some in collaboration with the San Fernando business community.
“Certainly what we would have is some of the paint that was donated for the promenade will be painting the sidewalks to brighten up the city. We do have a comprehensive plan, from Christmas going into Carnival, and it also lends to the synergy between the San Fernando City Corporation and the Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police and the TTPS as well, so we are doing things, and in a few short weeks you will start to see the genesis of what it is we have been working on.”
The Mayor also welcomed the Government’s Revitalisation Plan, applauding the continuation of work in the city.
“We saw the Revitalisation Plan by the Honourable Prime Minister, and certainly my statement to the public is simply, any revitalisation to San Fernando we accept, because for a very long time I believe that the second city has been ignored, and I say that respectfully, and certainly all that we are seeing – this is not the first waterfront plan that we saw – and certainly we are happy that that level of continuation is going on from the previous government into this government.”
He noted that developmental work carried out by the Central Government will significantly impact San Fernando.
“It will create jobs within the second city. It will create a whole new interest in terms of how it is we operate in the second city, and it may encourage other members of the business sector, as they were planning on assisting us on Mucurapo Street, which is another area that the government should look at in terms of assisting us to revitalise.”
