Construction has officially begun on three mobile police posts in Tobago.
The announcement was made by the Office of the THA Chief Secretary on Friday morning, confirming that the facilities will be located in Signal Hill, Plymouth and Goodwood.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s wider crime-fighting strategy announced by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, which will see the construction of 30 police posts across T&T.
The confirmation comes just two days after Chief Secretary Farley Augustine revealed that the Tobago House of Assembly was working closely with the Ministry of Homeland Security on plans to establish the posts on the island.
“For us, it is about increased police presence. We want to see police officers and members of the Defence Force more frequently. We think that there is something in the psychology of security about being able to feel and see the presence of those charged with the responsibility of protecting us.”
Mr Augustine said police stationed closer to communities affected by criminal activity should help improve response times and enhance public confidence in law enforcement.
“Having them in communities, that means that we are able to get a much more timely response from them, hopefully, because we also don’t want people to go and sit down in posts and not work. We want a much more timely response from them.”
The Chief Secretary said discussions are ongoing regarding a possible fourth location.
However, Mr Augustine noted that the use of police posts is not new to Tobago, noting that in 2024, a similar one was established at the Golden Lane Community Centre in response to a surge in criminal activity.
