Cutback In Production At Point Lisas Desalination Plant

An algae build-up at the intake area of the Point Lisas Desalination Plant is affecting the supply of pipe-borne water to hundreds of homes and businesses in Central and South West Trinidad.

The Water and Sewerage Authority says customers in areas from Caroni to Chaguanas, Point Lisas to Claxton Bay, Pointe-a-Pierre to San Fernando, and South Oropouche to La Brea may be experiencing low pressures, or, in some instances, no supply at all.

WASA says the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) owned and operated
Plant normally supplies 40 million gallons of water per day however, this has been reduced to 30 mgd, due to raw water quality issues, resulting from an algae build-up at the intake area for the Plant.

WASA is continuing to liaise with DESALCOTT regarding the situation but as a result of the reduced production, the normal daily or scheduled supply may be affected.

Customers are advised that a limited truck borne service is available upon request.
