The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) has ramped up its support to Guyana’s search and rescue operation following the sinking of the passenger ferry MV Barima, deploying both aircraft and a Coast Guard vessel to assist in the effort, the Ministry of Defence confirmed Tuesday.

In a media release, the Ministry said the TTDF began mobilising after receiving a request for assistance from Guyana on Sunday evening, in the immediate aftermath of what it described as “the tragic maritime incident.”
Since then, a TTDF aircraft has completed three flights between Trinidad and Guyana, supporting search and rescue operations on the ground. A Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard vessel was also dispatched yesterday, carrying a team of 20 personnel, including seven additional divers, to assist with search and recovery efforts.
The Ministry said further operational details, including specific personnel numbers and tactical arrangements could not be disclosed at this time “due to operational security considerations,” given the ongoing nature of the mission.
“The TTDF remains committed to working alongside regional partners in providing timely assistance and support during this difficult period,” the release stated.
The TTDF’s deployment comes in response to the capsizing of the MV Barima, which sank late Saturday night while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma along Guyana’s North Atlantic coast, reportedly after being struck by a large wave near Iron Punt on the Pomeroon River.
