Derek Ramsamooj Wins CCJ Case

Political analyst Derek Ramsamooj won a landmark case before the Caribbean Court of Justice over his detention in Suriname in 2020.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, the CCJ found that Ramsamooj’s detention under a “beperking order” — which denied him access to attorneys and family — breached his rights under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

The court also ruled that an alleged confession obtained while he was detained was unlawful, though it said the ruling would not invalidate the criminal charges still pending against him in Suriname.

Mr. Ramsamooj was awarded US$30,000 in damages after the court found his deteriorating health, including a stroke, was partially linked to his unlawful detention.
