Desalination Plants Planned For Mayaro, Moruga, And Charlotteville

The government is moving ahead with plans to construct three desalination plants, two in Trinidad and one in Tobago.

Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath said that, after months of negotiating with the IDB and WASA, the government had determined the plants would be located in Mayaro, Moruga, and Charlotteville.

“I will take to the Cabinet for the construction of three desalination plants, one of these three desalination plants in the three aforementioned areas. What that will then do, particularly for Moruga Tableland and Mayaro, that will free up the reliance on water coming out of the Navet Dam into areas like Barrackpore, Penal, Debe, parts of Moruga/Tableland, parts of Princes Town, parts of Naparima.”

Minister Padarath and officials from WASA established four tank farms in Penal on Wednesday. The tank farms, with a storage capacity of 80,000 gallons, are a short-term measure to bring about relief to residents in the area.
