Students of the Tranquillity Government Primary School got the opportunity to explore various career paths during their career day on Tuesday.
From hairdressers, fire officers, police officers, and veterinarians, among others, the students dressed up as their future interests, highlighting the many professions open to them.
The Principal of the school, Nicole Guy-Dunbar, urged students to begin thinking about their future and to reflect on their purpose for being in school.
“Dreams begin at primary school. Your dreams begin here. You are here for a reason. You are here for a purpose. You are not here by accident. You are here for a purpose, and some of you may think about schooling, ‘Why am I here? It is so boring.’ But the purpose of you being here is so that you realise your goals.”
Coast Guard officer Kwame Clarke shared with the students what it takes to get into these career paths.
“You have to be willing to work hard. Those people that you are seeing standing on the outskirts here – ask any one of them. You could ask any one of them after. They had to go through a training process to put on that uniform and to work there. Ask any one of them; there were some studies that they had to pass to get to even qualify to put on these uniforms and to work in this place.”
Mr. Clarke reminded students that hard work goes hand in hand with listening.
“You have to listen to those in authority over you. That will be your parents in this case, as you are in school; that will be your teachers; and that will also be adults that you will meet in the community. You have to listen to those in authority because in order for me to work and to stand up in this, somebody had to teach me this. Somebody who was older than me had to teach this to me. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide, Yeah, I’m gonna be in the military; I have it. Nope.”
The day included conversations and demonstrations by guests invited to share what their careers entail. For students, it was a day full of curiosity and a step towards figuring out their futures.
