Driver Rehabilitation Programme Holds First Session

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Eli Zakour is hoping that previously disqualified drivers will now become ‘road ambassadors.’

His comment came during Thursday’s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing as he confirmed that the Driver Rehabilitation Programme, which is geared towards motorists who were disqualified under the Demerit Points System, had successfully conducted its first session.

Twenty-seven motorists were involved in the first session at the Caroni Licensing Office on 18th August, with 50 people also attending one in San Fernando earlier this week. Classes will begin in Port of Spain and Tobago soon.

“We are launching very soon a road safety initiative. We are also using the opportunity of the Driver Rehabilitation Programme, because the persons who are going through this course, it’s a two-and-a-half-day rigorous course. I actually attended the class this week, I had an exam at the end and we are hoping that many of these persons will be now road ambassadors and they could go into the schools. We are actually in conversations right now with the Ministry of Education, where we’re starting programmes in the school. Nationally, we’ll be doing a programme on road safety, moving forward.”

Minister Zakour said the Online Certified Copy System will be launched next week, which will allow citizens to apply and pay for vehicle documents online.

“This system is going to be launched on Tuesday, where persons could apply and pay for their online certified copies online, and it will be delivered to TT Connect locations nationwide or at your home or office.”
