Contingency plans are in place to maintain the critical inter-island cargo link between Trinidad and Tobago, as T&T’s main cargo ferry, the Cabo Star, is scheduled to go into dry dock from July 12th to August 3rd.
This was the assurance from Minister of Works and Infrastructure, Jearlean John, at Thursday’s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing, after disclosing that the ferry would be temporarily taken out of service for mandatory maintenance.
However, she said the T&T Spirit, the Galleons Passage, and a hired barge, the MV Emprendadora, will pick up the slack.
“Now, to take what we call, dangerous cargo, such as the highly flammable and toxic materials, such as chlorine gas for WASA, oxygen for the hospital, bitumen, nitrogen, propane, et cetera, we had to hire, well, a barge that is called MV Emprededora to take that. They can take the big containers, and they can take the big bags of sand, et cetera.”
She said the government is urging businesses to stock up ahead of the dry-dock period.
