Eight Tobago Businesses Adopt Bus Shelters In THA Partnership

Eight (8) Tobago-based organisations have signed on to restore and maintain public bus shelters in partnership with the Division of Settlements, Public Utilities and Rural Development (DSPURD). This is the latest wave of support under the Division’s “Adopt A Bus Shed” initiative, launched in 2024 with Dominion Security Services Ltd.

The Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed at the Division’s Main Office in Scarborough by Administrator in DSPURD Ms. Ginelle Williams and representatives from each partnering business on Tuesday 24th June, 2025. The initiative gives organisations the opportunity to sponsor the refurbishment, branding and upkeep of designated bus shelters for a five-year period—strengthening public infrastructure while promoting their brand.

The milestone follows a month-long national media campaign led by Assistant Secretary Councillor Orlando Kerr to promote the ‘Adopt a Bus Shed’ initiative, first launched Monday 25th November, 2024 with Dominion Security Services as the pioneering partner.

Each participant shared why this community-focused initiative resonated with them:

Mrs. Krista Kent-Lawrence, Owner of Kris Styles – a home-based events, catering and gifting company:
“It’s always important to give back to your community. The bus shelter I chose isn’t directly where I live, but it’s close by and for me, it’s an opportunity to contribute. We’re rebuilding it, making minor repairs so it’s more comfortable for people in the area. I’d also like to encourage other businesses—this is a great way to give back. Don’t just think of branding; think of ensuring people have shelter when it rains or when the sun is blazing.”

Mr. Hayden Miller, Owner/Operations Manager, Ridge Construction Company Ltd.: “The communication from the Division was very good and clear. Ms. (Dalia) Jerry was very accommodating during our meetings and the process wasn’t long at all. It went very smoothly. We’re looking forward to what’s next. There’ll also be community advertising throughout Tobago as part of the environmental focus we’re bringing to the project.”

Mrs. Sandra Toney-Orr, Director, Tobago Tourism Agency Ltd. (TTAL): “Given our mandate, TTAL remains committed to working with industry stakeholders locally, regionally and internationally. Community tourism is a core focus for us and when we heard about this initiative, we couldn’t pass it up. This programme helps market the island and gives us the chance to work directly with Tobago’s communities.”

Mr. Neave McKenzie, CEO of Eye for Design Floral and Events: “I haven’t decided on the exact words for the shelter yet, but it’ll highlight that there’s a flower shop nearby and remind people of the beauty of flowers. Whatever floral creation I display, I hope it’ll bring a smile to someone’s face on their way to Crown Point or Scarborough.” “Yes, I’d definitely encourage others to participate. It’s essentially free for the number of years you get the branding opportunity. It’s great publicity for any business—take the chance and run with it.”

Mrs. Coryse Sobers-Roberts, Co-Owner Westside Auto Supplies and Services: “As small business owners, we saw this as a great opportunity to brand ourselves. We reached out to the Division because we want our business to grow and be recognized across Tobago. This is a fantastic chance for all business owners. It helps with advertising and allows your business to expand. I encourage everyone to get on board.”

Mr. Nathanael Frank, CEO/CTO of RicoTeck Ltd.: “I’ve always believed in public-private partnerships. They’re vital for growing our community and our economy. It’s an opportunity for businesses to contribute meaningfully to Tobago’s development—and yes, it helps with brand marketing and visibility. I think this opportunity was long overdue and I was excited to get involved.” “I really believe businesses have a responsibility to act. There’s always the cry: ‘Government, government…’ But what can we do? I hope to motivate others in the business community to think about how we can build the Tobago we all want to see.”

Mr. Jayon James, Owner of Naz Enterprises Ltd.: “I had road safety in mind when I chose to get involved. I’m still working on how to highlight that message but the main reason for partnering is that it’s an excellent initiative. My company focuses on promotions and branding and this is a great way to market ourselves and bring our Trinidad-based corporate clients into the Tobago space.” “My advice to Tobago’s business community? Stay consistent.”

Mr. Gabrel Reveiro, Manager of Rev’s Island Safety: ““For me, it’s about giving back to society—and of course the branding helps promote my company.” “The design on the shed will focus on the importance of PPE and general workplace safety.”
