Eighteen outstanding students are being recognised for their academic excellence after receiving the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship, an initiative that celebrates achievement while strengthening educational ties between Trinidad and Tobago and China.
The scholarships were presented through a partnership between the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation.
Chinese Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago Ren Hongyan said the programme reflects both countries’ shared commitment to investing in young people.
“The future belongs to the younger generation, and empowering youth through education means investing in the long-term development of both nations. This is precisely the philosophy behind the establishment of the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship for young students in Trinidad and Tobago.
Dear students, receiving this scholarship is both an honour and a responsibility. It recognises your hard work and determination and encourages you to continue striving for excellence.”
The Ambassador encouraged the recipients to view the award as recognition of their hard work and a responsibility to continue pursuing excellence.
“Your generation will shape the future of Trinidad and Tobago. Whether you grow into teachers, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, public servants, or professionals in any other fields, your knowledge and character will contribute to the modernisation and the sustainable development of this beautiful nation.”
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen challenged the students to focus on developing their interpersonal and teamwork skills and not just academic success.
“So many people are graduating with degrees, and they complain they don’t have a job, but when we interview some of them, they are not fully employable because of their social skills, and so your ability to relate to others, to work as a team, to incorporate knowledge from outside of your area of expertise that will help you make meaningful contributions is important.”
The Minister also encouraged the recipients to become active members of their communities, reminding them that volunteerism and community service are valuable.
“Community service is not punishment. It is a part of your personal development. If there is a blank wall in your community that you could partner with others and get it power washed and paint a beautiful mural that will brighten that community or an area where a lot of vehicles pass by, and it will bring a smile to motorists. If there’s an area that you want to plant some trees, there are so many things. I also see a lot of students do beach cleanups, and there are so many avenues that you can give back.”
The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship recognises academic excellence while encouraging students to become well-rounded leaders committed to serving their communities and contributing to the nation’s future.
