Energy Minister: Venezuela Energy Talks On Hold After Quake Disaster

A planned visit to Venezuela to negotiate processing of that country’s gas in Trinidad and Tobago has been delayed by the devastating double earthquakes that struck the South American country last week.

This is the word from Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Dr Roodal Moonilal, who noted that engagement is still on the table.

“We were in discussions with the stakeholders on the Venezuela visit. We have a particular agreement, side agreements and so on to look at, which we are looking at. In fact I think I am a signatory to something that I have to look at, but, of course, the government of Trinidad and Tobago will look at it broadly, and the Prime Minister will give further directions on that matter. Myself and Minister Sobers have been in touch with the Venezuelan Mission in Port of Spain on a fraternal and regular basis, and we expect that, either by visit there or their visit here, we will engage.”

The two earthquakes, one of a 7.2 magnitude followed less than one minute later by a 7.5 magnitude, struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24th, 2026.

Minister Moonilal noted that this country is preparing to send aid to our southern neighbour in its time of need.

“Given the damage that has been incurred and the situation there now, that would by definition put us back a few days or weeks, as the case may be. But through various Ministries in Trinidad, as you know, we have been working to see, as best we can, to send relief.”
