Fifa has hit back at what it calls a “concerted effort” to undermine president Gianni Infantino, after claims he had an affair with a Uefa staffer who was later paid off by the organisation.
British newspaper the Daily Telegraph reported that a severance payment from Uefa to a junior staffer was done, after an alledged affair with current FIFA President Gianni Infantino while he was its general secretary.
Fifa says Infantino “strongly denies” the claims, calling them “categorically untrue” and “demonstrably false.”
Uefa says it has lost confidence in him, and Norway’s federation president has called for his resignation. But Infantino has strong backing elsewhere, from Concacaf’s Mexican federation, Conmebol, and all 54 African football nations.
