First Peoples’ Reject Self-Proclaimed Cacique

Several representatives of the First Peoples indigenous communities have joined to wholly reject the inauguration of Eric Lewis to the position of Cacique.

The group referred to an invitation sent out by Mr. Lewis for a Coronation Ceremony in his name, from ‘Prince of Moruga’ to ‘Grand Chief of the First Peoples’ Sovereign Nation on August 9th at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Port of Spain.

But the group consisting of the Warrao Nation, Grand Chief Council of San Fernando, and the First Peoples Development questioned the move they claim was a “self-proclaimed” one.

Denouncing the move, the group said even if he was to be Cacique, they would not support someone who has erected or defended a monument to Columbus, given the unspeakable colonial violence and racism endured.

The group said they will involve the United Nations where there are certain laws to protect indigenous peoples.
