Government Examines Options For Modern Mass Transit System

Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John says a modern, efficient and reliable mass transit system remains a key long-term solution to T&T’s growing traffic congestion challenges.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s sitting of the House of Representatives, Minister John said the Government is examining options for developing a modern public transportation network that could ease congestion on the nation’s roads.

Her comment comes just one day after motorists were caught in gridlock for hours on Tuesday morning, following an accident on the highway in El Socorro, as well as another accident in Gasparillo.

Minister John noted that previous discussions explored rail-based transportation systems and suggested those options may need to be revisited as resources become available.

“We had a look at, what do you call it, rail above grade, below grade, and so on and maybe these are things we have to revisit again as money comes to hand. But you have to have mass transit that, number one, is reliable. Two, clean and secure. And maybe we could then kind of encourage people for that re-engagement of public transport.”
