All recipients of the Senior Citizens’, Disability and Public Assistance grants will receive the promised 250-dollar monthly increase in financial support in the new year.
This was reiterated by Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, Vandana Mohit, as she responded to questions during Day One of the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament.
“Member let me just state that no recipient will be affected. In addition to that, there are some challenges faced by the Ministry with the social welfare division and the data which I shared recently in terms of inaccurate information causing some wastage within the Division. Millions of dollars in wastage. We are cleaning up that in simple terms and as I indicated before we are trying to clear the backlog.”
The Minister made it clear there will be no delay in payments when the 250-dollar monthly increases goes into effect.
She also pointed out that there are no current delays in the payment of social assistance grants, especially the Senior Citizens’ Grant.
“From my information there is one system utilised at the NIB for payment of grants and what I could assure the national public of and the member, there has been no late payment of grants from the Ministry of the People.”
