Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali has promised a full and independent investigation into the MV Barima disaster, while stressing that the immediate focus remains on saving lives, supporting survivors and assisting grieving families.
The ferry issued a distress call late Saturday while en route to Port Kaituma.
The Government of Guyana confirmed on Monday that the death toll had risen to 10.
In an update on Monday afternoon, President Ali described the tragedy as one of the most painful moments in the country’s history and praised the extensive rescue effort involving emergency responders, volunteers and community members.
“Our priority remains to protect every life that still can be saved, to support those who have endured unimaginable trauma and loss, to comfort grieving families, and to account for every person who remains unaccounted for. Every minute matters. Every life matters, and every possible resource is being mobilised in pursuit of this mission.”
The President also pledged transparency and accountability once rescue and recovery operations are completed.
“I also assure the nation that there will be a full, thorough, and independent investigation into this tragedy. The families affected, and indeed the people of Guyana, deserve answers, deserve to know precisely what transpired and whether any failures contributed to this heartbreaking event. We will pursue the truth with transparency, impartiality, and accountability.”
The Government of Guyana reported that around 1:30pm on Monday, aggressive and coordinated actions by various stakeholders led to the positive identification of the location of the MV Barima.
