Director within the Social Protection Department of the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection and former Chairman of the Children’s Authority Hanif Benjamin has been granted $170,000 bail following his court appearance earlier today.
The 47-year-old trauma specialist is facing two charges under the Children’s Act: sexual communication with a child, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.
The charges stem from an incident earlier this month involving a phone or video call, during which a child was allegedly shown private parts.
He appeared before Master Delicia Bethelmy and was represented by attorneys Ajesh Sumessar and Andre Cole. As part of his bail conditions, Mr. Benjamin must surrender his passport, avoid all contact with the alleged victim and witnesses, and report to his nearest police station.
The matter was adjourned to January 16th, 2026.
In response, the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection confirmed it is aware of the serious allegations and emphasised that it upholds a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct.
