West Indies women’s captain Hayley Matthews is once again in contention for international honours, having been named among the finalists for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for May 2025.
The nod follows a string of high-impact performances that reaffirm her status as one of the most influential figures in women’s cricket.
The ICC revealed its shortlist on Tuesday, with Matthews joined by South Africa’s Chloe Tryon and India’s Jemimah Rodrigues. The announcement comes as Matthews continues to set the standard for all-round excellence, currently sitting atop the T20I all-rounder rankings and holding second place in the ODI format.
The 26-year-old Barbadian showcased her versatility during the West Indies’ tour of England, contributing significantly in both limited-overs formats. In the first ODI in Derby, she posted a valuable 48 runs and claimed two wickets, offering resistance despite a comprehensive defeat. Her earlier exploits in the T20I series were even more telling, as she amassed 177 runs at a strike rate exceeding 137 and took three wickets, earning her the Player-of-the-Series title.
While the West Indies suffered a 108-run loss in the opening ODI against England, there were individual bright spots. Aaliyah Alleyne and Qiana Joseph made notable climbs in the latest ICC Women’s ODI Batting Rankings. Alleyne surged 15 places to 76th after a lively 44 off 46 deliveries, while Joseph’s career-best 62 saw her jump 22 spots to 82nd.
Matthews, who held firm at fourth in the ODI batting charts, also improved her standing with the ball. Her 2-for-49 in Derby nudged her up two places to seventh in the bowling rankings, further underlining her all-round impact.
The ODI series resumes on Wednesday in Leicester, with the third and final match scheduled for Saturday in Taunton.
