Hindu Women’s Organisation Raises Funds To Empower Women And Girls

The Hindu Women’s Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago is continuing to empower women and girls through social projects focused on skills development, mental health and financial independence.

The organisation recently hosted a fundraising brunch to support its upcoming initiatives.

Vice President Romilla Maraj says the organisation held its first major fundraising event in years, as members seek funding for projects planned for the coming months.

“We haven’t had a major fundraising event like this for many years. So the members got together this year and decided that based on the projects that we have on the horizon, we will need funding for our projects, and this was one of the best options that came up.”

The organisation brings together women from different Hindu groups, with a focus that extends beyond religious activities.

“Members do come from different Hindu groups, and they come together, and we work together to do projects that may not have so much of a religious twist because we have many religious organisations who appropriately do that. We would do more social projects, so we look at empowering women and girls. We look at mental health. We look at giving women the opportunity to learn a skill where they can financially benefit and create employment.”

The fundraiser attracted strong support, with about 240 tickets sold, and organisers said the event was oversubscribed. They are now inviting others with similar interests to become involved.

“We invite persons who have a similar interest to contact us and become part of our organisation. We are not conflicting with any particular religious organisation because we come from all different organisations, and we work together to do projects that will assist women and girls in particular in terms of moving forward in a positive way.”

With strong support for its latest fundraiser, the organisation says it plans to build on the momentum with more initiatives to come.
