Diplomatic ties between Spain and Trinidad and Tobago were celebrated in grand style as the Spanish Navy training vessel Juan Sebastián de Elcano docked in Port of Spain on its first port of call for 2026 on Monday.
Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander shared highlights from day one of the ship’s visit.
“This was really, really incredible. We shared ideas, shared culture, and all of that, and, you know, we can only leave each other as better people. And that’s what we’re looking for, that consistency, that good relationship, that good ties. So, you know, that is what we shared today.”
The Juan Sebastián de Elcano, the jewel of the Spanish crown, is a sailing vessel that will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. Its main mission is to carry Spanish midshipmen, fulfilling their elite military training while circumnavigating the Atlantic.
Minister Alexander stressed the importance of joint training with foreign military teams.
“Training with foreign military teams, it is important because you learn as you grow. And that is what is happening in Trinidad and Tobago now more than ever. The Americans come, we do it. Spanish come, we do it. We would leave here, or persons from Trinidad would leave here and go to other countries to learn. So this is always a beneficial factor. It benefits both organisations.”
The Juan Sebastián de Elcano will be in Trinidad and Tobago between February 16th and February 21st.
