Faith, tradition and community took centre stage in St. James on Tuesday night as many joined the annual Hosay procession.
The street procession began with Flag Night, which marks the seventh day of the ten-day observance.
Under the glow of street lights, the multicoloured flags swayed above the crowds as St. James came alive for Flag Night.
Even persistent showers failed to dampen the spirits of participants carrying brightly coloured flags.
Hosay commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husayn and his followers at the Battle of Karbala and is observed during the Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.
Flag Night signals the start of the street processions and is dedicated to Hazrat Abbas, the brother of Imam Husayn and the standard bearer of his army.
The flags symbolise Abbas’ role as the standard bearer during the battle.
Each flag represents an individual or family within the community, and the tradition continues to attract support from people of all faiths, including Christians, Hindus, and Spiritual Baptists.
Devotees and supporters participated in the procession, carrying the multicoloured flags through the streets of St. James in a display of faith, remembrance, and unity.
The Hosay observance continues on Wednesday with Small Hussain Night, ahead of the climactic Tadjah processions.
