The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries has announced that the 2025-2026 hunting season will officially commence on October 1, 2025, with State Game Licences going on sale starting September 22, 2025.
The hunting season will run from October 1, 2025, through February 28, 2026, with a complete hunting prohibition during the month of March 2026 when all listed game species are removed from the schedule.
State Game Licences are priced at TT$100 per game species, with hunters limited to purchasing a maximum of three licences each. The licences, issued under the Conservation of Wild Life Act (COWA) Chapter 67:01, authorize hunting of specified game species on State Lands and Forest Reserves.
First-time hunters must present valid government-issued identification (National ID Card, Driver’s Permit, or Passport) along with a recent utility bill no older than three months. If the utility bill is in another person’s name, an authorization letter is required.
The ministry has implemented specific regulations regarding iguana hunting, reflecting conservation concerns for this species. Hunting and possession of Iguana (Iguana iguana) is strictly prohibited during January, February, and March, with violations carrying a substantial fine of TT$10,000.
Iguana hunting must cease by December 31, 2025, and hunters have until midnight on that date to dispose of iguana carcasses from their property. Additionally, lizard hunting is completely banned within the municipal boundaries of Port of Spain under Legal Notice No. 280 of 2019.
For other game animals, hunters have until March 31, 2026, to dispose of carcasses or any parts thereof from their possession.
All licence holders must complete and submit Mandatory Data Return Forms by May 31, 2026. Failure to comply with this requirement can result in fines of TT$2,500 per data form upon summary conviction, emphasizing the government’s commitment to tracking hunting activities for conservation purposes.
The ministry urges all hunters to familiarize themselves thoroughly with the Conservation of Wild Life Act Chapter 67:01 to ensure full compliance with hunting regulations and avoid violations.
