International Day For Disaster Risk Reduction

Chief Executive Officer of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management, Retired Major General Rodney Smart, says this country is working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to build capacity, identify and reduce disaster risk in the society.

Today, October 13th, commemorates the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and the ODPM’s CEO explains the thrust behind this year’s theme.

Resident Representative of the UNDP, Randi Davis, gives this country kudos for being prepared when disaster strikes. She commends T&T for being the first country on the ground to assist St. Vincent and the Grenadines when the La Soufriere volcano erupted.

She notes that right here in T&T, her organisation has brought help in terms of flooding.

Seven communities have benefitted from the early warning system including Diego Martin, Maraval, Caroni, Couva, Cunupia, Bacolet and Crux River in Tobago.
