Keeping It Green – UWI Team Studies Piparo Phenomenon

Saturday February 22nd, 1997. The day started like any other in the quiet south Trinidad community of Piparo, but it was unlike any other day.

Beneath the earth, there was rumbling, an immediate build-up, and then, with a loud roar, mud, water, and gas spewed 120 feet into the air.

The cry of those old enough to remember the eruption is still one of fear—fear of the unpredictability that comes with this particular phenomenon.

One team attached to the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, is hoping to change that and we’ve got the details in this week’s Keeping it Green.
