The family of legendary calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, popularly known as “The Mighty Sparrow,” has announced his passing at the age of 91.
According to a statement released by the family, Francisco died peacefully on September 27, 2026, in New York, surrounded by loved ones, following a brief illness.
Widely regarded as an institution in the entertainment industry, Francisco was celebrated for his skill and finesse as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, and was beloved by generations of fans. Beyond his artistry, he was remembered by his family as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner, and friend.
The family said they take comfort in knowing that before his passing, Francisco had given his life to Jesus Christ, having been baptized in the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
Plans for a public celebration of his life are being arranged, and fans and well-wishers are being encouraged to pay tribute on social media by tagging @therealmightysparrow.
