The Member of Parliament for the Constituency of Point Fortin was alerted by the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the district of Cedros, Mr. Shankar Teelucksingh, to the serious flooding that occurred on October 03, 2026, between approximately 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. across the southwestern peninsula following a torrential downpour. The areas mainly affected were Cedros, Fullerton and surrounding communities.

In response, Mr. Ernesto Kesar, MP, immediately mobilized the support of the relevant Government agencies to coordinate relief and clean-up efforts. The Ministry of Rural and Local Development, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, the Siparia Borough Corporation, the Water and Sewage Authority (WASA), and the Disaster Management Unit (DMU) were engaged to conduct assessments, coordinate clean-up operations, clear critical waterways affected by the heavy downpour, and provide relief packages to affected residents.

Private-sector and state-owned corporate entities were also mobilized to support the clean-up effort. Local businesses, together with state companies such as Heritage Petroleum Company Limited, provided assistance with clean-up activities in affected fenceline communities.

From approximately 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on October 03, 2026, MP Kesar and Deputy Mayor/Councillor Teelucksingh maintained a physical presence on the ground, visiting affected residents while clean-up activities continued. No further threat of increased flooding was reported during that period, as the rainfall had subsided and floodwaters had receded.

Members of the Disaster Management Unit (DMU) conducted assessments of affected residents and worked late into the night to gather the necessary information. Members of the private corporate community also supported the clean-up effort by providing cleaning supplies, transportation and manpower, thereby assisting in bringing the situation under control as quickly as possible.

On behalf of the affected residents, the Member of Parliament for Point Fortin wishes to express his sincere appreciation to all Government agencies, state and private corporate entities, staff of the Member of Parliament’s Cedros sub-office, and volunteers who assisted, and continue to assist, with the clean-up efforts. Particular acknowledgement is extended to the line Ministers, Dr. the Hon. Roodal Moonilal, the Hon. Jearlean John, the Hon. Khadijah Ameen, and the Hon. Barry Padarath, for their rapid response to the needs of residents during this period of urgent need.

Monitoring and assessment, the clearing of affected waterways, and clean-up operations will continue until all affected areas are restored to a state of normalcy.
