Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen has extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of SRP officer Jamal Charles, following a tragic incident on the compound of the Ministry’s head office at Kent House in Maraval.
Mr. Charles was reported to have ended his duties just after 3pm on Thursday, September 11th 2025, and was engaging with his colleagues when he was shot. He died at the scene.
Responding to questions in the Parliament on the matter, Minister Ameen said she met with ACP Sagramsingh, who is in charge of the Municipal Police Unit, and the Deputy Permanent Secretary on the incident, and appropriate crisis counseling has already been arranged for staff.
“We also have, in addition to the crisis counseling organised at the Ministry for staff, the support of the Victim Support Unit at the TTPS, which will, and they will advise us if we need to further engage because you will appreciate it’s the employees who are very traumatised because the incident took place on the venue at the Ministry’s head office. But you also have, in terms of his friends, his relatives, it’s a very sudden and unexpected thing. So certainly we will be guided by the resources from the Honourable Roger Alexander in regards to the Victim Support Unit. So we wait to be guided, Mr. Speaker, and I really don’t want us to be preemptive in terms of what we jump in to prescribe.”
Minister Ameen said the investigation is still ongoing into the cause of the death.
