Minister Sean Sobers: India Offers Key Opportunities For T&T

Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers says there are many opportunities for this country to benefit from India.

He made the statement while speaking during an event hosted by the Indian High Commission and the University of the West Indies on Monday.

The discussion focused on the visit to this country by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to T&T last year.

Minister Sobers noted that during the visit, both countries agreed on several areas of cooperation

“Commitments have been made for cooperation in areas such as the pharmacopoeia, which was mentioned before, diplomatic training, sports and culture, the donation of 2,000 laptops, 20 haemodialysis machines, two sea ambulances, and for the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, yes, solar electrification systems, which we are very, very grateful for.”

Minister Sobers says one significant benefit is the Overseas Citizenship of India Programme.

“It is this linkage with the diaspora that provides an avenue for the strengthening of relations between Trinidad and Tobago and India. Initiatives such as the OCI facility, as well as the Know India Programme, further foster people-to-people exchanges and allows for a greater understanding between our two countries.”
