Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, met with members of the Youth Training and Employment Partnership Programme (YTEPP) Board, led by Chairman Bishop Dr. Maurice Jones, to discuss expanding access to skills training and strengthening pathways to employment and entrepreneurship on Thursday 22nd October.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s Head Office at Nicholas Tower, Port of Spain, focused on bringing programmes closer to communities, maximising the use of existing facilities, and improving coordination among training institutions under the Ministry’s purview.
With YTEPP now falling under the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Minister Watts emphasised the importance of understanding young people’s needs and aspirations and ensuring that training equips them with practical, marketable skills. Particular attention was given to reaching at-risk youth and providing opportunities to support their personal and professional development.
Discussions also addressed access to training for individuals preparing to leave correctional institutions and transition homes. The focus was on equipping participants with the skills and confidence needed to transition into community life and pursue employment or self-employment.
Greater coordination among training institutions was identified as a means of making more effective use of available resources and ensuring that programmes respond to community needs.
The Ministry remains focused on connecting young people with relevant training and meaningful opportunities to build their confidence, strengthen their capabilities, and contribute to their communities and national development.
