Several Government Ministers have praised Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar following her address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
Acting Prime Minister and Couva North MP Jearlean John described Mrs Persad-Bissessar’s address as “brilliant”, highlighting her focus on transnational organised crime, UN reform and improving citizens’ lives.
“The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago called for international cooperation to be measured by its results, with the safety and well-being of people at the centre of efforts to restore trust. Transnational organised crime remains a serious threat to small island states, with criminal networks directly endangering citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. Strengthened coordination with the United States to dismantle criminal syndicates forms part of the Government’s efforts to restore security to communities.”
On Haiti, Minister John highlighted PM Persad-Bissessar’s call for solutions that are “Haitian-led and Haitian-owned”, while reaffirming Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to working with CARICOM and other institutions.
She also hailed the Prime Minister’s call for greater accountability and efficiency within the United Nations.
“A more efficient organisation, better equipped to respond to future challenges, is essential to ensuring that multilateralism improves people’s lives.”
Meanwhile, UNC Chairman and Minister of Finance Davendranath Tancoo described Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar’s speech as “powerful and substantive” noting that she placed the safety and security of citizens at the centre of her address, while highlighting the threat posed by transnational organised crime, illicit weapons and narcotics trafficking.
“The Prime Minister spoke not in abstractions, but in the language of results, the same people-centred approach that has defined her government since taking office in 2025. She placed the safety and security of our citizens at the heart of her address, speaking candidly about the very real threat that transnational organised crime, illicit weapons, and narcotics trafficking pose to Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. Her call for a United Nations that is responsive and effective, one capable of making a tangible difference in people’s lives, reflects the same standard she has set for her own government at home.”
And Deputy Political Leader of the UNC and Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Dr Roodal Moonilal also congratulated the Prime Minister, saying he listened to her address with “great pride”.
Dr Moonilal described the delivery as “insightful, powerful and compassionate” and said the Prime Minister had raised issues of national and global importance.
“Prime Minister Persad Bissesar SC has once again brought pride and respect for Trinidad and Tobago at the seat of the community of nations.”
He said her commitment to “democracy, security and prosperity” remained a hallmark of her public advocacy.
