Ministry Of Health Urges High-Risk Groups To Get Flu Vaccine

The Ministry of Health advises members of the public that the 2026/2027 Influenza vaccines are available at public health facilities throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ministry continues to monitor the circulation of respiratory illnesses, including influenza and COVID-19, through its established national surveillance systems. At this time, surveillance data do not indicate an unusual increase in respiratory illnesses. The public will be advised of any significant changes in disease trends that may require additional public health action.

The Ministry strongly urges individuals in the following high-risk categories, or those caring for loved ones who fall into these groups, to get vaccinated to prevent severe illness:

  • Children: Aged 6 months to 5 years
  • Older Adults: 65 years and older
  • Pregnant Women (Note: The vaccine also provides essential protective immunity to the baby after birth)
  • Persons living with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease and Asthma
  • Healthcare workers

Vaccination remains an important public health measure that can help protect individuals and reduce the risk of serious illness and complications associated with Influenza.

The 2026/2027 vaccine is composed of Inactivated Influenza Virus Antigens covering the following strains:

  • Inactivated Influenza Type A (H1N1): Switzerland strain
  • Inactivated Influenza Type A (H3N2): Michigan strain
  • Inactivated Influenza Type B: Tokyo strain

Members of the public are encouraged to contact their nearest health facility for information on vaccine availability, clinic schedules and any applicable eligibility requirements.

The Ministry of Health also reminds the public that vaccination should form part of a wider approach to protecting one’s health. Persons are encouraged to practise good hygiene to reduce the spread of influenza and other communicable diseases:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitiser (at least 70% alcohol).
  • Clean and sanitise high-touch surfaces frequently.
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as utensils, water bottles and towels.
  • Avoid touching your face and eyes with unclean hands.
  • Limit close contact with individuals showing symptoms of illness.
  • Wear a mask where appropriate.
  • Stay at home if unwell.

Further information on Influenza vaccines can be accessed via the Ministry of Health’s website at health.gov.tt and its official social media platforms.

The Ministry of Health reaffirms its commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the population and encourages all eligible persons to access the influenza vaccine at the nearest health centre, free of charge.
