The North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) has announced an expansion in its healthcare delivery, recording an increase in diagnostic imaging and a strengthening of surgical services across its network. These developments are part of a push by the current Board and Executive Management to reduce waiting lists and improve patient outcomes.

The NCRHA has recorded an increase of over 40,000 diagnostic scans compared to the same period last year. The surge covers critical testing areas, including:
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans.
- Mammograms, ultrasounds, and X-rays.
Chairman Dr. Tim Gopeesingh noted that upon assuming office in August last year, the Board inherited a substantial backlog. Immediate changes were implemented following consultations with the Radiology Department to aggressively address these delays. CEO Bhadase Seetahal-Maraj emphasized that early detection through these scans reduces disease progression and decreases the economic burden on the public health system by preventing unnecessary hospitalizations.
The NCRHA has also implemented new measures to ensure patients receive both major and minor surgical procedures in a timely manner.
Mr. Ian Ramnarine, Head of Surgical Services, highlighted the critical role of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), which offers specialized services not widely available elsewhere in the public system. To manage waiting lists more effectively, the Authority is now optimizing the use of multiple facilities, including:
- Arima General Hospital and Couva Children’s Hospital for minor and same-day surgeries.
- Collaborative efforts with doctors across the wider public health system for specialized referrals.
