New Educational Video On Water Quality Testing Launched For Secondary School Students

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA), in collaboration with the National Institute for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST), the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), and the Ministry of Education (MoE), officially launched the Water Quality Testing Video, a key educational resource developed for Secondary School students.

The launch brought together representatives from partner agencies, educators, and environmental professionals in support of advancing environmental education and strengthening scientific awareness among students.

Delivering remarks at the event, the EMA’s Deputy Chairman, Ms. Neeala Mongroo emphasised the critical importance of water as a resource that “sustains our health, supports ecosystems, drives economic activity, and directly impacts the quality of life within our communities”.

Ms. Mongroo stressed the importance of the video as “an important initiative designed to empower individuals, particularly our secondary school students, with the knowledge and tools needed to understand, monitor, and protect one of our most precious natural resources for present and future generations”.

Designed to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding, the Water Quality Testing Video presents technical information in a clear and engaging format. Through this initiative, students are better equipped to understand the importance of water quality monitoring, environmental protection, and the responsible stewardship of natural resources.

Developed specifically to support Sixth Form Environmental Science teachers and students, the video provides practical guidance on water pollution and demonstrates methods used to test key water quality parameters. Dr. Fazal Ali, President of NIHERST shared his agency’s vision that compelled their involvement in this collaboration.

“The year 2026 marks a defining moment for global water sustainability, as international efforts intensify to address water scarcity and climate-driven disruption ahead of the United Nations Water Conference 2026, which will examine the role of artificial intelligence-driven solutions in advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. NIHERST remains committed to strengthening scientific literacy and youth engagement in science education, recognising that meaningful innovation depends on empowering young people not only to use technology, but to understand the science behind it.”

Aligned with the Secondary School Environmental Science curriculum, the video combines scientific expertise with accessible educational content to enhance classroom learning and promote greater environmental awareness among students.

Technical expertise for the initiative was provided by the EMA and IMA, while production support was led by NIHERST.

Beyond its educational value though, the initiative encourages students to make informed decisions and adopt environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives. It also supports national efforts to promote environmental awareness and sustainability among young people, helping to cultivate the curiosity, knowledge, and confidence needed to become active environmental stewards.

The IMA’s Information Officer, Glendon Glasgow stated, “We wanted this video to be more than just a technical demonstration. The goal was to create a resource that students and teachers could easily follow and return to, while also helping them understand the importance of water quality monitoring and the role it plays in protecting our environment. This collaboration also reflects the value of partnerships in making scientific knowledge more accessible and engaging for students.”
