The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has executed final commercial agreements with Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Shell) in support of the Aphrodite project, marking what the company describes as a significant step forward for the country’s energy sector.
According to a media release issued Wednesday, the agreements represent a major increase in NGC’s ability to monetise resources belonging to the people of Trinidad and Tobago for their benefit. NGC’s pipeline and gas-related infrastructure is expected to play a critical role in bringing Aphrodite’s gas reserves to market, with first gas anticipated by the second quarter of 2027.
NGC Chairman Gerald I. Ramdeen described the company’s role in advancing the Aphrodite project as a major milestone for the country’s energy sector. He said the execution of the agreements reflects the results of NGC’s new vision and business model, aimed at strengthening Trinidad and Tobago’s energy security and supporting the domestic energy sector. Ramdeen added that Aphrodite will boost future gas supply for the local energy market, support the sustainability of downstream operations, grow economic activity and, in the long term, contribute to national development.
Ramdeen also credited the technical, commercial and legal teams from both NGC and Shell, saying an agreement of this scope required sustained collaboration across multiple disciplines and reflected the strength of industry partnership in supporting the development and security of the country’s energy sector.
Ramdeen was pointed in his assessment of the commercial terms secured, stating that the agreements bring 400% more value to the people of Trinidad and Tobago than what had previously been negotiated. He characterised this gap as reflecting value that could have been lost due to what he called the ineptitude of those previously responsible for managing the country’s energy sector, adding that the outcome demonstrates what is possible when the interests of the country and its people are prioritised.
NGC President (Ag.) Edmund Subryan said the execution of the agreement significantly increases NGC’s ability to meet its commitments to the downstream sector, including obligations to power producers, light industrial customers and its allocation into Atlantic LNG. He said the company looks forward to receiving these gas volumes into its pipeline network, which will add meaningfully to NGC’s revenue-generating capacity on behalf of the country.
Subryan added that NGC’s infrastructure provides an essential link between offshore gas reserves and the downstream sector, and that the company remains focused on ensuring the necessary agreements are in place to facilitate a secure, safe and reliable supply of natural gas to its downstream customers. He said NGC will continue to leverage its infrastructure, expertise and industry relationships to support the sustainable development of the country’s energy sector.
