Over 660 Households Benefit From $3 Million In House Repair Grants

Grants worth close to $3 million were distributed on Monday through the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services.

Vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and single-parent households were among the beneficiaries.

Speaking at the Distribution Ceremony on Monday, the Minister of Social Development and Family Services, Donna Cox, says initiatives such as the Home Repair Grant are important. She added that it is part of the effort to create a nation where no one is left behind.

“We are keenly aware that the challenges faced by these groups are not temporary; they are complex, deeply rooted in the social fabric of our society.”

Minister Cox noted that with several challenges facing under-served communities across the country, targeted and thoughtful intervention is required.

“I give you the assurance today, though, that whether it’s expanding the scope of our Grants, improving access to services, or working in close partnerships with community organisations and other stakeholders, your Government will spare no effort in our stride to improve the lives of those in need. We recognise too that we cannot do it alone and therefore our efforts must be inclusive and collaborative.”

The data presented by the Minister is as follows:

  • Minor house repairs for 360 households: $1,708,057.00
  • Sanitary plumbing assistance for 152 households: $628,238.00
  • House wiring assistance for 151 households: $561,205.00

Resident of Laventille and recipient of the Grant, Anthony James, says that he will now be able to repair parts of his house that were affected by the rains.

“When rain falls, man, it’s a mess and I think the Grant will help me to renovate the place and have better living conditions. It’s important not only to me, to a lot of people who are suffering, struggling, and having financial difficulties, and that’s the problem I feel. Assisting citizens of Trinidad and Tobago means a lot.”

With a total of 205 applicants, the Grants distributed on Monday benefitted 663 households.
