Two teams flirting with relegation from Tier 1 in the TT Premier Football League met in the second game at the La Horquetta Recreation Ground on Match Day 20, which was contested on Friday night. Here are the highlights from the clash between Caledonia AIA and the hosts.
Terminix La Horquetta Rangers were hoping that home turf would be a factor as they tried to stave off relegation in the TT Premier Football League. The former title contenders were sitting second from bottom on the points table when they welcomed Caledonia AIA to Phase Two, with the Morvant team not looking much better in the points standings as they occupied 8th place on the 12-team table.
It was La Horquetta making their mark first, and it was the former Caledonia striker doing the damage: Kevon “Showtime” Woodley at his deadly best off the feed from Stephano Christopher, muscling past his marker and power-flicking the football past Thane Devenish in the Cale goal for the 11th-minute opener.
They would hold that lead to the half-time interval, but ten minutes after the restart Caledonia AIA found an equaliser. Their captain, Keron “Ballpest” Cummings, delivered a teasing free kick, which was well met by Vynicius Dutra Sousa to tie the scores at 1-1.
That parity lasted until deep into the contest, when the home team got the opportunity to seal the win after referee Chrystal Sobers awarded a penalty.
Showtime Woodley buried the spot kick as Devenish went the wrong way, making it 2-1 La Horquetta in the 85th minute.
That is how it remained until the final whistle from Sobers, with La Horquetta Rangers claiming the win over Caledonia AIA.
