Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC is warning citizens to beware of fake news.
The Prime Minister issued the warning following the circulation of a false international report – one that she says was irresponsibly repeated by some local media.
In a post on her X account, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has since refuted the claims that the United Kingdom has stopped sharing intelligence on drug-trafficking vessels over concerns about military strikes in the Caribbean.
Secretary Rubio said: “I did see a CNN report yesterday. I’m not going to go into great detail than to say that it’s a false story. It’s a fake story. And what’s happening now is people with a business card that has a government email on it become sources because they don’t know. They’re not even in the know. So they either have an agenda or they want to make themselves important. And it’s been a plague, a story after story that’s either inaccurate or misleading, and that falls in the category of both; that story does. But again, going back to look, this is a counter-drug operation. The President ordered it in defence of our country. It continues. It’s ongoing. It can stop tomorrow if they stop sending drug boats.”
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with the United States to curb the flow of drugs, guns, and human trafficking into Trinidad and Tobago.
She added that the Caribbean cannot be considered a zone of peace while criminal cartels continue to fuel violence.
