PM Persad-Bissessar Pledges Upgrade Of UWI Debe Campus

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC says the University of the West Indies campus in Debe will be refurbished to provide further academic opportunities to students who reside in South, South-West, and Central Trinidad.

The Prime Minister was speaking to journalists at the Post Cabinet Media Briefing on Thursday.

“Yes, we said a law faculty there. I talked about doing forensics. I talked about doing law enforcement training. I other areas we could have opened up. Now, with the AI and the technology in the world, those are some other areas that we can explore for training for our children.”

Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Dr. Roodal Moonilal, who is the Member of Parliament for Oropouche East, where the UWI Debe campus is located, described the condition of the campus when he visited earlier this week as horrific.

“That campus there is on over 100 acres of land, sugar cane land. I have had the good fortune to go to many university campuses in the world, including the Caribbean, and that, when completed will be among the best university campus, I say the world, because I have seen from India, China, all over.”
