Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC is adamant that Trinidad and Tobago had nothing to do with the now controversial “double strike” in the Caribbean Sea.
US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth has come under fire from members of the US Congress for reportedly giving a “no one left behind” order during a strike on an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean Sea in September.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar maintains that the United States is a sovereign nation.
“I cannot be judge and jury here to determine whether they are right or whether they are wrong. Those are not within our jurisdiction or my remit. I would say this, however: that if there is a boat or a ship out in international waters and it doesn’t carry a flag, so you don’t know. Does it belong to T&T? Does it belong to the US? Who does it belong to? Then my advice is that within the law they are treated like pirates and therefore will not have the protection that others carrying a flag, identifying who they are and where they are going, so they are basically pirates at sea.”
