PM Urges Public To Scrutinise Political Promises Amid Oil Revenue Shortfall

Prime Minister Stuart Young says the population has to listen with careful attentiveness to the promises being made on the political platform.

He says the turmoil in the world, especially where oil is concerned, requires careful and sensible thinking.

“We are facing a barrel of oil at $63 US, and if you don’t understand what that means, the budget had a barrel of oil at over US$75 a barrel. So if now you’re only getting $63, you’ve already lost $12 US a barrel of oil.”

The Prime Minister says with this level of revenue, the question arises as to how the promises being made by certain political parties can be fulfilled.

He calls for a level-headed assessment of the outcomes from the Government’s planning and strategies.

“You have seen how this Government in the last nine and a half years has increased the revenue in difficult circumstances. You have heard me say that just a few of the negotiations that I did on behalf and with the support of my colleagues earned us $38 billion we wouldn’t have gotten. That is real.”

PM Young says that without a plan addressing where funds will come from, the expenditures being proclaimed will require obvious alternatives for financing, such as from the International Monetary Fund and devaluation. These are options he suggests of which the nation should be wary.
