Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro is defending the recently established Mobile Police Units, pointing to hundreds of patrols conducted to date and a successful operation in Tarouba over the weekend.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he condemned what he described as disingenuous media reports over the weekend, saying the units’ achievements demonstrate their effectiveness.
The Police Commissioner said the TTPS is continuing to evaluate the impact of the police units and will make adjustments where necessary to enhance their effectiveness.
“The micro-police units have been successful, and they are continuing to serve the purpose and roles that we have placed them in in the particular areas to so such do. In fact, there was actually an operation led out of one of the micro-police units, and I would say in Tarouba, over the weekend, that was very successful.”
He said the TTPS is continuously assessing the performance of the units and will make adjustments where necessary to improve their impact.
“Transit police, traffic wardens, the divisional officers, the tactical and task force and operational units – they all function from within those units on a rotation basis. We do not wish to advertise to the public how and when these operations are done, but I will just urge the public to give it, as you said, some time, and we will measure the successes from those units, and we will then decide how to tweak it to better serve the community.”
