Deputy Commissioner of Police for Intelligence and Investigations, Suzette Martin, is now the subject of an internal investigation in the wake of a report alleging criminal conduct.
The investigation was initiated by newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, following a report he received on June 18th.
At the TTPS Media Briefing on Monday, the Commissioner said he cannot provide details on the allegations against DCP Martin outlined in the report due to the ongoing investigation. However, he did offer some insight into the nature of the claims.
“What I can say is that the allegation itself is one where the person, the firearm dealer, would have indicated that certain acts would have been carried out against him and that he felt that it was bordering on criminal conduct.”
The investigation is being led by Assistant Commissioner Curt Simon, who confirmed that his team held its first meeting on Monday morning to outline the parameters of the investigation.
Mr. Simon said it’s still too early to provide a timeline for its completion but expressed full confidence in the members of the investigative team.
“The investigation would be done by a very, very competent and professional unit of men – a unit comprising of men and women of the TTPS who are very much skilled in doing what it is we need to do.”
Commissioner Guevarro said the full details of the allegations will be disclosed once the investigation is complete.
He assured that all necessary resources will be made available to facilitate the process and underscored the TTPS’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
He also stated that neither his office nor the wider TTPS has jurisdiction over matters involving the Deputy Commissioner.
“That rests in the hands of the Police Service Commission. On the other hand, the adjudication of this matter also does not rest in the hands of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service nor the Commissioner of Police, and we will be seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions at the conclusion of Mr. Simon’s investigation.”
Commissioner Guevarro said DCP Martin has not been placed on leave at this time.
