Police Service Reports Reduced Violent Crimes And Increased Firearm Seizures

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has reported a reduction in violent and property-related offences.

At Monday’s Police Media Briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Junior Benjamin revealed that officers have carried out 1,953 operations targeting priority offenders, leading to the arrest of 1,522 individuals. He said 73 guns and over 1,500 rounds of assorted ammunition have been seized.

DCP Benjamin added that the TTPS has also recovered 164 kilogrammes of marijuana and one kilogramme of cocaine.

He highlighted that firearm seizures have increased compared to the same period last year.

“We have seen an increase in the numbers of persons or the number of firearms that have been seized. Last year, we had 27 firearms seized. To date, we have at least 43 firearms seized, and it means there are more persons that are at least charged and will be going to court because of the hard work of the police officers.”

Statistics also indicate a 59% reduction in violent crimes, with 32 murders recorded so far for the year, compared to 46 in 2024 and 66 in 2023. Other serious crimes such as woundings, sexual offences, and robberies have also decreased.

“Again, we are not satisfied in terms of where we are. We believe that there is certainly too much, and there’s 32 murders too much and we will continue to put more robust strategies in place to look at the areas where we’ve seen increases.”
