Amid recent reports of robberies during the festive season, Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin is urging citizens to exercise caution when carrying cash or other valuables in public spaces.
With several incidents of larceny and other minor offences reported ahead of the festive season, DCP Martin is urging citizens to remain vigilant as they go about their daily activities.
Speaking to reporters on the penultimate day of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s 12-day ‘Festive Shield Outreach’ in St. James, she advised the public to stay alert, particularly when carrying valuables.
“Please, when you go out, you manage the amount of cash that you have in your possession. We now have bank cards that you can use at any and everywhere, so we’re asking to limit your cash, limit your jewellery, and be aware of your surroundings.”
DCP Martin also reminded motorists to avoid driving under the influence, emphasising the importance of responsible behaviour on the nation’s roadways.
“We are asking persons not to drink and drive because we still have our officers doing breathalyser checks on the outside, and sometimes even though we’re here, we are still showing that caring and giving part, we also have to enforce the laws from time to time.”
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s ‘Festive Shield Outreach’ is a 12-day initiative that began on December 12th as part of the TTPS’ comprehensive Christmas operational strategy, reinforcing its commitment to public safety.
On Monday, the outreach featured a nationwide inter-agency roadshow across six communities, creating opportunities for open dialogue, safety education, and sharing information on crime prevention and available support services.
DCP Martin expressed her hope that the initiative will eventually evolve into an annual, nationwide event.
“The feedback to date, excellent, and we are hoping that this would not be a one-off but it would be an annual event for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in going forward. All the Divisions are on board, and we are getting tremendous reviews from this initiative.”
